Extend your space with VELUX dormer windows

Dormer windows have a special way of transforming lofts and attics. As they protrude from the roof, dormers let you enjoy more headroom, better views, and a feeling of openness that maximises the potential of otherwise dark and cramped spaces. They’re the ideal solution for converting your loft into a functional living space.

Dormer windows not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home but also significantly increase air intake and light flow, making your space feel larger and more comfortable. VELUX dormer windows are designed to bring up to 2.5 times more daylight into your home compared to traditional dormers, helping to reduce the need for artificial lighting and providing a better indoor atmosphere.

Key benefits of VELUX dormer windows

Maximise natural daylightVELUX dormer windows allow up to 2.5 times more daylight to significantly boost the amount of natural light entering a room. The extra daylight helps balance the room's overall lighting, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day, and giving the space a more inviting feel.
Enhance airflowNot only do our dormer windows fill your loft with natural light, they also let fresh air circulate freely. This helps your space feel open and comfortable, whether you’re converting a loft into a cosy bedroom, a lively home office, or a relaxing bathroom.
Make your space feel biggerOne of the standout benefits of VELUX dormer windows is the additional headroom they provide. The dormer's structure increases ceiling height, creating a more spacious and comfortable environment. This makes previously cramped loft spaces feel more open and usable.
Choose your preferred window operation modeVELUX dormer windows are highly versatile and can be combined with manual, electric, or solar-powered roof windows, giving you full control over light and ventilation. While the dormer frame is built separately, this allows you to choose the operation type that best suits your needs, whether it’s the convenience of solar or electric control, or the simplicity of a manual window.
Energy-efficient windowsOur dormer windows come with both double and triple glazing options. This contributes to great energy performance while also helping maintain a steady room temperature that’s neither too hot nor too cold.

Bedrooms and kids’ rooms

A dormer window in a loft bedroom or kids’ room can completely transform the space, creating a welcoming and peaceful retreat. The natural light that pours in makes the room feel airy and spacious, rather than dark and confined.

Loft conversion

Dormer windows are a perfect solution if you’re planning a loft conversion and want to turn a dark, cramped room into a high-end, functional space. Not only do they flood the room with natural light, but they also create additional headroom, making your loft feel more like a natural part of your home rather than an attic space.

You can install dormers anywhere at home in the pitched roof, which includes gable roofs, hipped roofs, and mansard roofs.

How to find your ideal dormer window solution

With VELUX, you can choose from a number of dormer window options to match your:

Room size and layout

If you're working with a larger room or a spacious loft conversion, the standard VELUX dormer will give you more light and headroom, making the room feel even more open and airy. For smaller rooms or areas with limited ceiling height, the mini dormer is a great option. To ensure maximum enjoyment from the dormer windows, we generally recommend choosing a window that is as large as at least 15-20% of your room's floor area.

Glazing

The type of glazing you choose for your dormer window impacts both comfort and atmosphere. For spaces that require extra quiet and warmth, such as bedrooms or areas near busy streets, triple-glazed roof windows provide excellent noise and heat insulation. For most living areas, double glazing provides a good balance of energy efficiency and sound reduction. If you're aiming for a peaceful bedroom, triple glazing focused on well-being helps block out noise and keep the room warmer, creating a more comfortable, restful environment.

Interior finish

VELUX dormers comes in white maintenance-free and white-painted finish. The white maintenance-free finish is our most durable and robust finish made of a wooden core encased in a hard-wearing, waterproof white polyurethane mould. It is moisture resistant, and therefore ideal for all room types and comes with a wipeable surface with seamless corners.

Control light intake and room temperature with VELUX blinds and shutters

VELUX blinds and shutters offer a convenient and efficient way to control your indoor environment. Our interior blinds let you easily adjust the light intake from the dormer window to your liking. If you want to dim the room and add a bit of privacy, our translucent roller blinds provide a great solution for rooms like living rooms and home offices. For when you require complete darkness, such as when you’re sleeping in your bedroom, you can add our blackout blinds to your dormer window.

If heat protection is your goal, our exterior solar-powered anti-heat blinds or anti-heat blackout blinds provide a smart and reliable way to regulate room temperatures, creating a more comfortable environment, whether you’re working in front of a screen or sleeping.

Frequently asked questions about dormer windows

What is a dormer window?

A dormer window is a vertical window set within a structure that extends upward from a sloping roof. It consists of a window frame that projects outward from the roofline, creating additional space inside to enable extra headroom.

Are dormer windows worth it?

The additional height provided by the dormer frame creates extra headroom inside, making a significant difference in loft spaces that tend to be short on space and light. This makes dormers ideal for converting lofts into usable living areas such as bedrooms, bathrooms, or offices.
