Discover how Jodie and Olly transformed an overlooked attic into a daylight-filled, multifunctional space with VELUX roof windows and smart blinds.
Bolder and brighter interiors
Upon receiving the keys to their home, they peered through a small hatch in the loft and uncovered an unexpected treasure – a vast, unused void. From the start, this discovery lingered in the back of their minds, sparking ideas and possibilities as they wondered how best to use the space.
While the couple renovated the house one room at a time, the potential of this loft remained a quiet inspiration. The room was waiting for the perfect moment to become a stunning office and dressing room that will combine their vision of functionality, beauty and light.
A vision beyond the walls
From the very beginning, Jodie and Olly saw potential in every corner of the property.
The dressing room, the final piece of their renovation story, presented its own set of challenges. After living in the space for some time, Jodie and Olly realised it needed to serve dual purposes, as both a dressing room and a home office.
Jodie: “It’s been really good to live in the space and see how we use it. I’m a creative person and I love a room that’s full of light. So, I’m going to put in a much larger roof window and add two single roof windows to flood the light through the space, in both directions.”
To improve the space, they replaced the old roof windows with new ones and added extra roof windows, allowing even more natural light to fill the room and create a brighter, more inviting atmosphere.
“I'm just over the moon with how it's been completely transformed.”
Bringing the vision to life
Jodie and Olly reimagined the room to maximise its potential. By incorporating new VELUX roof windows on either side of the roof, sunlight streams in and every corner is brightened.
The couple decided to replace their old single roof window with a 2in1 top-hung roof window to bring in more daylight and fresh air. They wanted to open up the roof and expand their view to the outside. On the opposite side, they installed two single top-hung solar roof windows, spaced apart, to ensure that every inch of the room was truly bathed in light and brought to life. With so much natural daylight entering the room, Jodie wanted to have control over the light and block out the sun when she needed to. So, she opted for VELUX solar blinds, which can be adjusted through her phone using the smart home solution, VELUX ACTIVE.
Jodie: “I love coming in here first thing in the morning and getting ready for the day. All our clothes are in here so it’s just a really nice, organised space to get dressed. My dressing table is underneath the window, so the light is perfect for makeup and hair, and it just makes the whole morning an enjoyable experience.”
Jodie: “Adding these additional windows on the side and replacing the window on that side has flooded the space with light. We now use it so much, in fact, it’s probably one of the spaces I spend most of my time in.”
Today, this once over-looked space has become a source of inspiration and joy.
Jodie: “We’re so happy with how this space has turned out, it’s become one of our favourite rooms in the house. It’s now somewhere we want to be all day.”
A comfortable space for every moment
The final addition to the room included a VELUX top-hung roof window replacement that’s positioned over Jodie’s desk. This space also serves as a home office for Jodie, who works in interiors and uses fabric samples throughout the day. Having lots of natural light allows her to see the colours in their truest form, enhancing her productivity and creativity. What’s more, with the choice of smart blinds, they have the convenience of controlling them directly from their phone, allowing for effortless adjustments at any time.
Jodie: “I can adjust the daylight throughout the day as needed. As much as this is a productive space, it’s so easy to switch up the environment.”
“Olly and I will come up here in the evening, chill out, read, have a drink, listen to music. It’s become the most multi-functional space in the house.”
For this couple, their home is more than just a building, it’s a reflection of their dedication to creating a place where every room has a story and a purpose.
