Outgrowing the traditional three bedroom home

Recent years have shown many of us how important access to a home workplace, with daylight and fresh air, is. Nathalie and her family are familiar with this, given that at times the whole family of four was at home with both work and online schooling. They found that their otherwise spacious villa in the French town of Orgeval fell short.

"We realised that we didn't have the optimal set-up at home. We only had one office, and when the children also were home-schooling, I had to work from the dining room table," Nathalie explains.

That got the family thinking about potential renovations, despite having lived in their house for 13 years without any major changes. Nathalie's new home office hit the drawing board.

A dark room with possibilities

The obvious idea was to look at the first floor of the house, where one of the rooms had been used as a playroom, TV room and fitness space – but never an office. And there was a good reason for that.

"It's a nice big room, but there was not enough light within the space. And for me it's absolutely crucial to be able to work in daylight. I'd never be happy sitting in artificial light all day. So, I was excited about how we could solve that problem," Nathalie says.

The family entrusted the job to an installer, who quickly returned with a solution: the VELUX 3-in-1. Three sashes within one frame, on the south side of the roof.

"The idea of a roof window appealed to me a lot, with light, fresh air and beautiful design all important to me. I was really looking forward to seeing the result, although I was a bit nervous, too" Nathalie reveals.

A big day

The family was out when the installation team arrived with the new VELUX 3-in-1 roof window for the first floor. The craftsmen carried out the new installation with such little impact, that Nathalie could scarcely tell that they'd been there. Well, apart from the fact that the roof windows had been fitted by the time she got home, meaning she could get to work decorating her new office!

"The light in this room is absolutely amazing now. Whatever the weather or the time of day, there's so much daylight here that I don't need any artificial lighting. And that really makes a difference if, like me, you work in front of a screen all day. It's a huge comfort to have and I'm so happy with the result," Nathalie says.

Peace of mind

Nathalie has settled in nicely in her new surroundings beneath the roof windows. She's furnished the space simply and elegantly, and the room is transformed by its healthy doses of daylight. Nathalie also enjoys being able to close the door when she needs to.

"In the past, when I used to try and work at the dining table, the whole family would always end up circling around me in the afternoon. Now I can just close the door when I've got a conference call and I don't have to sit with headphones on to get some peace and quiet," she says.

VELUX 3-in-1 has opened up a previously dark room to the south-facing sky, and on sunny days Nathalie can also make use of VELUX blinds, which can be adjusted as needed.

"I use the blinds at certain times of the day and they work well. We're really pleased we decided to create a bright office. The realisation of the project with VELUX 3-in-1 could not have gone better. "
