Positioning your windows

position your windows to get optimum daylight

Because roofs tend to be high up, loft spaces often have the best views. By taking a few simple principles into account, you can really make the most of the views from your home.

It’s important to select a window with the right length in relation to where it is on your roof, and the steepness of your roof’s pitch.

Window position

The angle of a roof window lets more light into a room than a vertical window. A roof window’s top edge can also be slightly higher than a vertical window’s, giving you a better view.

The more windows you have, the better your view. Our general rule of thumb says that window space should make up a minimum of 15% of your room's total area. That’s why a great way to get the most out of your view and let in even more daylight is to install VELUX Roof Windows.

Roof pitch

The key to a perfect view is getting the right window length for the pitch of your roof. The bottom edge of the window should be 90 - 120 cm above floor level, and the top edge of the window should be about 200 cm above floor level. A general rule of thumb is the flatter the roof, the longer the window.
